Writing An Art Critique. The Dream

A.) This painting was made by Henri Rousseau in 1910. The medium that was used is oil on canvas. It is located in Museum of Modern Art, New York City. This painting features Henri Rousseau's Polish mistress, Yadwigha in a jungle filled with plants and animals. The animals all throughout the painting are some what hidden and you have to search for them. The animals even blend in with the green plants. Most of this painting is in the color green with shades of yellow and blue for the flower plants.
B.) The color green was used throughout  most of this painting. And each individual plants' leaves look exactly alike. I see repetition with flowers because there is a lot and and they all look alike.
C.) The artist is trying to express his mistress in a dream hearing the sounds of the playing instrument. I think he is trying to say she dreaming that she is in the jungle and was awoken by the music.
D.) All the objects in the painting go well together, it doesn't look like there's anything that's out of place. Everything in this painting fits well where it's at. Everything is very precise and looks almost perfect in my opinion. I feel like the preciseness of the all the objects in this painting communicates the fact that she's in a dream. I do feel moved by this painting because I really like the way a women's silhouettes look in paintings. And the women being in nature just ties it all together.

  1. Jasmine, you definitely understand the steps of the critique process. I think you could say more about "repetition" and "texture" as well as "movement" in step two. You could also elaborate in step three a little more. You hint to some of the interpretation in your judgment step. Great work overall.
